Teaching at the UC Washington Center
UCR is one of the participating campuses in the University of California Washington Center, which helps carry out the University's mission of research, teaching and service in the nation's capital. The UC Washington Center is a residential, instructional and research facility representing all the UC Campuses. As part of UCR's Washington program, we send undergraduates, graduate students and faculty to research, teach, study and live in rich cultural, political and international environment of Washington DC. In May of 2007, the University celebrated the UC Washington Center's sixth anniversary, having sent nearly 7,000 students through this prestigious program, fondly known as "UCDC."
An important part of UC-Riverside's contribution to the Washington Center is the resident faculty members we send to teach and research at the center every academic quarter. We are currently seeking applications from faculty interested in spending one or more quarters in Washington D.C., for the 2009-10 academic year, beginning Fall 2009. Faculty responsibilities include teaching one elective course open to students from the entire UC system, conducting a weekly seminar with UCR students to connect them to the diverse resources in Washington, DC, and supervising a UCR graduate student who works as a teaching assistant for the UCR Washington seminar and who conducts dissertation research while in the city.
The UCR Washington program provides our resident faculty with a housing and travel allowance for the quarters spent in residence in Washington, and their departments receive funds to replace their courses. We are usually able to offer efficiency apartments in the Washington Center building itself, located in downtown Washington blocks from the White House and Dupont Circle, and close to the Washington Metro.
Faculty responsibilities include:
- teaching one elective course open to students from the entire UC system,
- conducting a weekly seminar with UCR students to orient and interest them in the historical and fundamental resources in Washington, D.C.
- supervising a UCR graduate student who works as a teaching assistant to aid faculty in teaching the elective course and the UCR Washington seminar.
Faculty receive a housing and travel allowance for the quarter(s) spent in residence in Washington, and their departments receive funds to replace their courses. Faculty generally stay in efficiency apartments in the Washington Center building, located in downtown Washington blocks from the White House and close to the Metro lines.
Interested faculty are asked to submit a letter of application and a short CV to the Washington Center Steering Committee by December 5, 2008. The letter should:
- explain your research agenda while in Washington DC
- describe a selection of two different upper-division elective courses you would offer (only one will be selected.) The course(s) should connect with the Center's focus on politics (taken in the broad sense) or with resources specific to Washington, DC and be appealing to a broad range of students.
- indicate whether this course is currently offered at UCR or needs to
be created - specify which quarter(s) you would like to participate
- include information about your vision for the UCR seminar - what approach you would use to introduce students to the resources in DC.
A support letter from your Departmental Chairperson must also be included with your application.
Letters should be sent to:
