Finding an Internship

Some high profile internship application deadlines tend to be EARLIER than the UCDC application deadline. Some examples are below:

White House Internship Program (Fall 2015: Apr. 19, 2015)
FBI (Summer Volunteer Program deadline: typically Oct 1 of previous year)
CIA (Summer 2015 deadline: October 15, 2014)
Department of State (Summer 2015 deadline: October 17, 2014)

Visit the DC Internship Hotpage for a categorized list of information about internships that are currently available. If the link that is provided does not have a specific button for internships, go to the site's search engine and type in "internships".

Use the list of previous participants to see what other students have done.

Access UC San Diego's Career Center Washington, DC, internship listing. It is maintained by UCSD but it is a good resource for web links. It is divided by discipline/ research areas for easy access, similar to the UCR DC Internship Hotpage above.

www.idealist.org - Click the link for internships. This website is great! It has a wealth of information from all types of organizations (mainly non-profits) and it is updated daily. You should search for opportunities in DC, but you can also search for listings in Maryland (MD) and Virginia (VA). These are big states so should look only in the following cities - which are accessible via metro:

  • Maryland (MD) - Bethesda or Silver Springs
  • Virginia (VA) - Arlington or Alexandria

www.internmatch.com - Enter the type of internship you are looking for and put Washington, DC in the green banner at the top of the home page.  Internships are categorized and labeled by time frame, whether it is paid or unpaid and the location of the site.

www.majoredin.com - Enter your major and Washington, DC as the location.  This will bring you to a listings page.  Click on internship in the left-hand menu and browse opportunities within your field of study.

www.craigslist.com - click on the link for Washington, DC. Once there, go to the jobs section and type in "internship" in the search engine. These listings are also updated daily with new information. These postings include opportunities for the greater Washington, DC metropolitan area, so please be sure to check the location of the organization.

If you are interested in an internship on Capitol Hill, www.hillzoo.com has postings from different congressional offices.

Washington Post Jobs uses Twitter to post all sorts of internships and other positions.

www.internships.com - you have to create an account to access the listings (make sure you choose the free option), but there are often listings here for Washington, DC and surrounding areas.  Be careful using this site as they are a clearinghouse for applications and they do not give you direct contact with internship sites.
